As we approach the blessed day of Eid al-Adha—a day filled with immense blessings, Taqwa, and unity—it is essential for us to revive the beautiful Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.
To help our community prepare, here is a simple, comprehensive guide on the rulings, method, and etiquettes of the Eid prayer.
“And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.”
— Surah Al-Hajj (22:32)
1. The Islamic Ruling
Scholars have differed regarding the ruling of the Eid prayer, but all emphasize its great importance:
Fard Kifayah (communal obligation)
A highly emphasized Sunnah
Fard ‘Ayn (individual obligation) for capable men (opinion of Ibn Taymiyyah)
Reminder: The Prophet ﷺ encouraged both men and women—even those exempt from prayer—to attend and witness the goodness of Eid.
2. Timing of the Prayer
Starts: 15–20 minutes after sunrise
Ends: Before Dhuhr begins
Sunnah Tip: Perform Eid al-Adha prayer early so families can proceed with Ud’hiyah (sacrifice) without delay.
3. How to Pray Eid (2 Rak’ahs) (No Adhan or Iqamah)
First Rak’ah:
Takbirat al‑Ihram
7 additional Takbirs
Surah Al-Fatihah
Preferably: Surah Al-A‘la or Surah Qaf
Second Rak’ah:
Stand and say Takbir
5 additional Takbirs
Surah Al-Fatihah
Preferably: Surah Al-Ghashiyah or Surah Al-Qamar
Stay after prayer to listen to the Khutbah, which reminds us of sacrifice, Taqwa, and family ties.
4. The Takbiraat
Let the remembrance of Allah fill our homes, streets, and masajid:
General Takbir (Mutlaq): From the start of Dhul-Hijjah through the Days of Tashriq
Restricted Takbir (Muqayyad): After obligatory prayers from Fajr of Arafah to Asr of the last day of Tashriq
Common Takbir:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.
5. Sunnahs & Etiquettes of Eid Day
Make your Eid morning special by following these Sunnahs:
Ghusl & Beautification – Wear your best clothes; apply fragrance (for men)
Arrive Early – Engage in Dhikr and secure your place
Change Routes – Use different paths going and returning
Express Joy (Halal) – Celebrate within the limits of Islam
Exchange Greetings – “Taqabbal Allahu منا ومنكم” (Eid Mubarak!)
Focus on Meaning – Eid is about worship, gratitude, and sincerity
6. Ruling on the Sacrifice (Ud’hiyah)
Highly emphasized Sunnah for those who can afford it
Must be done after Eid prayer
If done before the prayer, it counts only as regular meat—not Ud’hiyah.
Spiritual Lessons to Carry Forward
Eid al-Adha teaches us:
Unity – Standing together as one Ummah
Honor – Upholding the symbols of Allah
Gratitude – Declaring Allah is greater than all
Discipline – Continuing the spirit of worship
Conclusion
Let us revive this blessed Sunnah, teach these beautiful practices to our children, and celebrate Eid through sincere worship, remembrance, and strengthening family ties.
May Allah accept all our عبادات and grant us a truly blessed Eid.
