The Hajj season is not merely a ritual performed; it is a profound, spiritual, and heartfelt journey from which Muslims return with renewed hearts. At its core, it is a response to the ancient divine call of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him).
1) Hajj as a Journey to Allah (SWT)
Hajj is not simply traveling from one country to another; it is a transition from one inner state to another. It is a journey of the heart before it is a journey of the body:
A move from being preoccupied with worldly matters to being devoted to Allah (SWT)
A move from heedlessness to remembrance
A move from distraction to pure monotheism
A move from sin to sincere repentance
The pilgrim leaves behind family, wealth, and comfort, saying through his actions, “O Allah… I have left everything and come to You with a humbled heart, seeking Your mercy.”
Scholars have said: Hajj is not a tourist trip; it is a journey of the heart toward Allah (SWT), in which the servant leaves the world behind and returns with a renewed heart.
2) Hajj as a Response to the Call of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him)
When Prophet Abraham (AS) completed the building of the Ka’abah, Allah (SWT) commanded him to proclaim Hajj to humanity. Allah (SWT) says:
“Proclaim the pilgrimage to all people. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant path.” (Al-Hajj 22:27)
Since that time, this call has echoed through the ages, and believing hearts continue to respond before bodies do. People come from every corner of the earth, as if hearing that call now. This means:
When you perform Hajj, you are participating in a continuous spiritual story throughout history
You are responding to the call of the noble Prophet Abraham (AS), who invited you to Allah’s House
You are reviving a great act of worship that Allah (SWT) intended to remain until the end of time
Hajj is not an isolated event; it is the continuation of the message of monotheism conveyed by Prophet Abraham (AS) and Prophet Muhammad (SAW ﷺ).
Second: Explanation of the Pilgrims’ Chant (Talbiyah)
At the heart of this journey, pilgrims raise their voices in the timeless declaration of monotheism:
“Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, inna alhamda wa’nni‘mata laka wa’lmulk, la sharika lak.”
These words (Talbiyah) are the symbol and spirit of Hajj. They are declarations of faith, monotheism, renewal of the covenant, obedience, servitude, and a manifestation of sincere servitude to Allah (SWT).
1) “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk”
Its meaning: “Here I am, O Allah. Here I am.” It is as if the pilgrim says: “O Allah… I have come in obedience, submission, and love for You.” Repeating labbayka signifies complete surrender to Allah (SWT). It is as if the pilgrim says: “O Allah… my heart has arrived before my feet.”
2) “Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk”
A clear declaration that Allah (SWT) is One, with no partner. Hajj is an act of worship performed purely for Allah (SWT)—free from showing off or seeking praise. The pilgrim cuts off anything that competes with the love of Allah (SWT) for the love of Allah (SWT). It is a cry of monotheism, reminding the pilgrim that the purpose of Hajj is to correct one’s relationship with Allah (SWT).
3) “Inna alhamda wa’nni‘mata laka wa’lmulk”
All praise is Yours: You alone deserve all forms of praise
All blessings are Yours: Every blessing—health, wealth, and the ability to perform Hajj—comes from You alone
All sovereignty is Yours alone: You alone are the absolute Owner of all things.
This phrase trains the pilgrim to be grateful and to recognize that he owns nothing on his own. O Allah, we are guests in Your dominion, moving by Your command and returning to You.
4) “La sharika lak”
The Talbiyah concludes with this phrase, once again affirming that there is no partner with Allah (SWT)—making monotheism the beginning, the essence, and the end of this sacred declaration.
Summary of the Spiritual Meanings
Hajj is a return to Allah (SWT)
Talbiyah is a declaration of allegiance to Allah (SWT)
Tawaf is circling around the center of monotheism
Sa‘i is a reminder that relief follows hardship
Standing at Arafah is the greatest moment of closeness and of forgiveness
Third: Profound Spiritual and Moral Lessons from the Hajj Season
Pure Monotheism: Hajj is an expression of monotheism from the first talbiyah to the final ritual. It teaches the believer to attach the heart to Allah (SWT) alone.
Honoring the Sacred Symbols of Allah (SWT): Allah (SWT) says: “Whoever honors the symbols of Allah—it is truly from the piety of hearts.” (AlHajj 22:32). Arafah, tawaf, sa‘i… all instill reverence for Allah’s commands.
Equality Among Muslims: One garment, one emotion, one purpose. True virtue is in piety, not appearance.
Patience and Endurance: Hajj is a school of patience through fatigue, crowds, and heat. It trains the soul to endure hardship in obedience to Allah (SWT).
Islamic Unity: Millions gather in one place. A reminder of the Ummah's unity despite differences.
Remembering the Hereafter: The scene of Arafah resembles the Day of Judgment. It awakens the heart to prepare for meeting Allah (SWT).
Discipline and Commitment: Hajj has structured rituals and precise timings. It teaches order and obedience. It teaches self-control, patience, and moral discipline, qualities that extend beyond the pilgrimage. “Hajj is during well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein, there is to be for him no sexual relations, no disobedience, and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do—Allah knows it.” (Surah AL Baqarah 2:197)
Abandoning Sin: Prophet Muhammad (SAW ﷺ) said: “Whoever performs Hajj and avoids obscenity and sin returns as if the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim). This virtue shows that Hajj is a complete spiritual cleansing, erasing past sins through sincere devotion. It is a chance for sincere repentance and a fresh start.
Hajj Brings Great Reward: The Prophet (SAW ﷺ) said: “An accepted Hajj (Hajj Mabroor) has no reward except Paradise.” (AL Bukhari, Muslim). This shows that Hajj is not only a means of purification but also a gateway to eternal reward.
Day of Arafah: A Day of Forgiveness and Freedom from Hellfire: The Prophet (SAW ﷺ) said: “No day is better to Allah than the Day of Arafah. Allah descends to the lowest heaven and boasts to the inhabitants of the heavens about the people of the earth, saying: ‘Look at My servants, disheveled and dusty, who came from every mountain pass, hoping for My mercy. On no day are more people freed from Hellfire than on the Day of Arafah.” (Sahih Ibn Hibban, 3853). This Hadith shows that Arafah is a day of divine pride, mercy, and mass forgiveness.
Sincerity to Allah (SWT): Hajj requires effort, cost, and sacrifice. It tests the purity of intention.
Following the Prophets: Hajj rituals are tied to the story of the Prophet Abraham, his wife Hagar, and the Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon them). It connects the believer to the prophets' legacy.
Conclusion
Hajj is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning of true transformation. It is a journey toward Allah (SWT), a response to the call of Prophet Abraham (AS), and a renewal of the covenant of monotheism. The pilgrim should return with a new spirit: a purer heart, better deeds, and conduct closer to Allah (SWT).
